Rachel Carson was a biologist whose words shook the world. She wrote several popular books about the creatures living in and around the sea. But she is best known for one book, Silent Spring. Carson knew how chemical poisons damaged or destroyed organisms 51 addition to the insects or plants they were meant for. She believed that the public should be informed 52 these effects, so that they could 53 wise decisions about the use of pesticides and other dangerous chemicals. Silent Spring, published in 1962, described the effects of chemical poisons on the environment. Even today, babies are bom with small amounts of chemicals in their bodies.

Kennedy formed a group to study pesticide spraying. Some pesticides were banned in several countries, Tighter rules were placed 59 the use of others. People began to look for ways to control harmful insects and plants without chemicals. Today many years after Silent Spring was published, people still argue about pesticide use.

In a television interview made before her death in 1965, Rachel Carson said. “ We still talk in terms of conquest. We still haven’t become mature enough to think of ourselves 60 only a tiny part of a vast and incredible universe. Man’s attitude towards nature... is important... because we now have the power to alter and destroy universe. ”
