三、3.Reading Comperhension
1.The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects. Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people’ s desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers ’money.Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading. A few years ago, a brand of bread was offered to dieters (節(jié)食者)with the message that there were fewer calories (熱量單位,卡路里)in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic (適合節(jié)食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer’ s real concerns, considering fire insurance. Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real mason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising. Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless product by______.
A.stressing their high quality
B.convincing him of their low price
C.maintaining a balance between quality and price
D.appealing to his buying motives
2.The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that______.
A.thin slices of bread could contain more calories
B.the loaf was cut into regular slices
C.the bread was not genuine bread
D.the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same
3.The passage tells us that______.
A.sometimes advertisements really sell what the consumer needs
B.advertisements occasionally force consumers into buying things they don't need
C.the buying motives of consumers are controlled by advertisement
D.fire insurance is seldom a worthwhile investment
4.It can be inferred from the passage that a smart consumer should______.

B.guard against the deceiving nature of advertisements
C.be familiar with various advertising strategies
D.avoid buying products that have strong emotional appeal

A.how to make a wise buying decision
B.ways to protect the interests of the consumer

D.the function of advertisements in promoting sales
7.Tides(潮汐)are created mainly by the pull of the moon on the earth. The moon's pull causes water in the oceans to be a little deeper at a point closet to the moon and also at a point farthest from the moon on the opposite side of the earth. These two tidal"Waves"follow the apparent(明顯的) movement of the moon around the earth and strike nearly every coast line at in- tervals of about twelve hours and twenty-five minutes. After reaching a high point, the water level goes down gradually for a little more than six hours and then begins to rise toward a new high point. Hence, most coast lines have two tides a day, and the tides occur fifty minutes later each day.Differences in the coast line and in channels in the ocean bottom may change the times that the tidal wave reaches different points along the same coast line. Tne difference in water level between high and low tide varies from day to day according to the relative positions of the sun and the moon because the sun also exerts a pull on the earth, although it is only about half as strong as the pull of the moon. When the sun and the moon are pulling along the same line, the tides rise higher, and when they pull at fight angles to one another, the tide is lower. The formation of the coast line and variations(變化)in the weather are additional factors which can affect the height of tides. Some sections of the coast are shaped in such a way as to cause much higher tides than are experienced in other areas. A strong wind blowing toward the shore may also cause tides to be higher.Which of the following is right according to the passage?
A.Some coast lines do not have two tides each day.
B.Tides are not affected by the shape of coast line.
C.The sun has as much effect on tides as does the moon.
D.Tides usually rise to the same land day after day.
8.The time that high tide occurs at a particular place is affected by all of the following EXCEPT______.
A.the direction of the wind
B.channels in the sea bottom
C.variations in the coast line
D.the position of the moon
9.Which of the following is an accurate statement about the pull of the sun on the earth?
A.It is about twice the pull of the moon.
B.It determines the time of high tide.
C.It determines the time of low tide.
D.It is about half the pull of the moon.
10.The height of the tide is affected by all of the following EXCEPT______.
A.the position of the sun
B.channels in the sea bottom
C.the direction of the wind
D.variations in the coast line

A.be the same height as they are now
B.be of equal height all the time
C.sometimes be higher than they are now
D.no longer be affected by the wind
13.During the Christmas shopping rush in London, a story was reported of a tramp (流浪漢)who, apparently through no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Presumably all theproper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents. However that may be , our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he tookadvantage of these facilities, when the shop re-opened,he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him.He seems to have been a man of good humour and philosophic temperament--as indeed tramps very commonly are. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He submitted, cheerful enough to being taken away by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the coverage the story received in the newspapers and on television. The tramp was locked in the store______.

七、7.Translation from English into Chinese
0. What, then, is a good education at the end of the twentieth century? Some educators suggest that it should include foreign languages and the study of foreign cultures;a mastery of English, including the ability to write and speak well, because communications have become all-important in the modern world. and also because“a person who doesn't speak and write Clearly doesn't reason clearly either”; some knowledge of the social sciences(sociology, psychology)that deal with human relations and human problems;some basic knowledge of modem information systems, since the educated professionals of tomorrow will have to understand their machines. Is that all? “No, of course not. ”answer the educators, “We have not mentioned the two great building blocks of education:history and literature!”
Is this truly the best modern education? Perhaps. But every educator would add or subtract a few subjects. And no matter what list of courses would be offered, it would not be approved by all. Not only do the professors have their own ideas on the matter, but the students have theirs'too. “I don't believe, ”protested a Harvard student when his university revised its programs, “I don't believe that colleges have the fight to define what an educated person is. ”But then, who has?
