Passage 1

For many women choosing whether to work or not to work outside their home is a luxury.they must work to survive. Others face a hard decision. Perhaps the easiest choice has to do with economics. One husband said, "Marge and I decided after careful consideration that for her to go back to work at this moment was an extravagance we couldn' t afford. ”With two preschool children, it soon became clear in their figuring that with babysitters, transportation, and increased taxes, rather than having more money, they might actually end up with less.

Economic factors are usually the first to be considered, but they are not the most important. The most important aspects of the decision have to do with the emot ional needs of each. member of the. family. It is in this area that husbands and wives find themselves having to face many confusing and conflicting feel ings.

There are many women who find that homemaking is boring or who feel imprisoned if they have to stay home with a young child or several children. On the other hand, there are women who think that homemaking gives them the deepest satisfaction.

From my own experience. I would like to suggest that sometime the decision to go back to work is made in too much haste. There are few decisions that I now regret more. I wasn' t mature enough to see how much I could have gained at home. I regret my impatience to get on with my career. I wish I had allowed myself the luxury of watching the world through my little girl's eyes.

31. Why do many women have to work outside their home?

D. Because they think the work outside their home is a luxury for them.

32. Why did Marge and her husband consider it an extravagance for Marge to go back to work?

A. Because they might pay more than they earned on the whole.

B. Because Marge has to take care of their children at home.

C. Because they don' t have a baby sister to help them.

D. Because Marge has to pay more transportation fares.

33. What are the two ma jor considerations in deciding whether women should go out to work?

A. The economic factor and their social status in life.

B. The social status and the family role they play in the family.

C. The economic factor and the emotional needs of fami ly members.

D. Requirements of the society.

34. Some women would rather do housework and take care of their children than pursue a career because they feel_________.

A. highly stressed while working at home

D. deeply satisfied with their work at home

A. work outside home and make a lot of money

B. stay at home and take care of her family

Passage 2

We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways.

It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying. There are also a number of striking similarities in the way different animals show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because they are born with those behavior patterns.

Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and English literature, a phrase like “he went pale and began to tremble" suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big : shocked. However, "he opened his eyes wide" is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese“ surprise" can be described in a phrase like” they stretched out their tongues" . Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike.

Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings.Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people s faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do。

36. According to the passage,______

A. we can hardly understand what people' s gestures mean

B. we cannot often be sure what people mean when they describe their feelings in words or ges tures

C. words can be better understood by older people

D. gestures can be better understood by most of the people while words can not

37. People' s facial expressions may be mi sunderstood because_____

A. people of different ages may have different understandings

B. people have different cultures

C. people of different sexes may understand a gesture in different way

D. people of different countries speak different languages

38. Even in the same culture, people______

A. have different abilities to understand and express feelings

B. have exactly the same understanding of something

C. never fail to understand each other

D. are equally intelligent

39. From this passage . we can conclude_________

A. words are used as frequently as gestures

B. words are often found difficult to understand

C. words and gestures are both used in expressing feelings

D. gestures are more efficiently used than words

40. The best title for this passage be___.

A. Words and Feelings

B. Words, Gestures and Feelings

C. Gestures and Feelings

D. Culture and Understanding

Passage 3

The air is polluted The earth is poisoned Water is unsafe to drink and rubbish is burying the civilization that produced it.

our environment is be ing contaminated faster than nature and man' s present efforts can prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry. More people and more industry will bring us more motor vehicles, larger cities, and the growing use of manr made materials. This is happening not only in advanced societies but among the developing nations as they become industrialized.Pollution is, in a sense, exported.

Now many scientist are expressing fears about the possibility of world pollution. Some experts declare that the balance of nature is being so upset that the very survival of humanity is in danger.

What can explain and solve this growing problem? The fact is that pollut ion is caused by man - by his greed and his modern way of life. We make increasing “industrialization”our chief aim. For its sake we are willing to sacrifice everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the cities, eager for the benefits of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, so in that time has pollut ion become a serious problem. The connection is clear.

Isn't it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going and why? It reminds one the stories about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker,“I' ve some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we' re making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we' re lost and don ' t know where we' re going. ””The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when applied to our modern society.

41. What does the word “contaminated” the first sentence of the second paragraph mean according to passage ?

A. Contained.

B. Consumed

C. Examined

D. Ponlutea

42. Which of the following sentences is not true according to the author?

A. The author wants to tell us that pollution is a serious probl em caused by man.

B. We can stop this trend of pollution merely by our own efforts.

C. Many scientists show their worry about the world pollut ion.

D. The pollution of the earth will threaten the human being' s survival.

43. Who caused this problem according to the passage?

A. The motor cycles.

B. The growing industries

C. The human beings.

D. The larger cities.

44. Why do people constantly move from the countryside into the cities?

A. Because the earth in the countryside was polluted.

B. Because there are more jobs provided in the cities

C. Because it is easier to make a living in the cities.

D. Because they are eager to get the benefits of modern cities.

45. What is the author' s purpose be concluding his article with a story?

A. To show that though we have made great progress in development we lost our direction in the modern society.

B. To illustrate that we are now in the process of flying a plane with a confused pilot driving it.

C. To prove that neither flying a lost plane nor directing the way of a plane is an easy job.

D. To make sure that everybody is the cause of our world pollut ion through everybody' s making rapid progress.
