Do you want to say what you think in a letter to the President of the United States? You'll get a reply from him written in ink, not typed in only a few days.
The President gets about 4,000 letters every week. He answers everyone who writes to him on special White House paper. But he doesn't need a lot of time for it. In fact, he only gives 20 minutes a week to looking at his personal correspondence. He has the most modern secretary in the world to help him.
His computer, worth£ 800,000, has its own room on the first floor of the White House. It has a bank of electronic pens which write like the President writes, in his favorite light blue ink. Each letter the President receives gets a number according to the type of answer it needs. The pens then write the correct reply for it, according to the number. Each letter takes less than a second to write. A White House Official said, “It's not important that the letters come from a computer. Each letter says what the President wants to say.”

Task 2 (每小題 2 分,共 10 分)
Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage;
After a day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping enables your body to prepare itself for the next day.
There are four levels of sleep each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your muscles relax little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, you body shifts back and forth from one level of sleep to another. Although your mind slows down from time to time you will dream.
Scientists who study sleep point out that when dreaming occurs, your eyeballs begin to move quickly (although your eye-lids arc closed). This stage of sleep is called RME, which stands for rapid eye movement. If you have trouble falling asleep, some people recommend breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will help make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.

Task 3 (每小題 2 分,共 10 分)
Questions 51to 55 are based on the following passage:
Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports(極限運動)and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventure, those who have climbed the highest mountains, explored unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who seek an immediate thrill from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.
I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place(perhaps a bridge or a hot air balloon) 200 meters above the ground with an elastic rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour till the rope stops you from hitting the ground. it is estimated that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities as risky as bungee jumping involve jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs. Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly under threat. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.
Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in a comparatively safe environment;they buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to seek danger in activities such as bungee jumping.
51. The best title for the passage would be_______.
A. Dangerous Sports: What and Why
B. The Boredom of Modern Life
C. The Need for Excitement
D. Bungee Jumping: Is It Really Dangerous?

D. are exploring unknown place
53. In bungee jumping, you_______.
A. fall towards the ground without a rope
B. slide down a rope to the ground
C. attach yourself to a rope and fall towards the ground
D. jump as high as you can
54. People probably take part in dangerous sports nowadays because_______.
A. they have a lot of free time
B. they can go to hospital if they are injured
C. they no longer need to hunt for food
D. their lives lack excitement
55. The writer of the passage has a______attitude towards dangerous sports.
A. positive
B. negative
C. neutral
D. nervous
Task 4 (每小題 2 分,共 10 分)
Direction: Read the following passage, and then decide whether the statements(No. 56 to No.60) are true (T)or false (F). You should mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I am not. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged(包圍) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?
But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called"aunt"or"granny"can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage and concern for others.
In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide.Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty , which is pure and real.
Reading and Learning is the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one' s heart and looks.
()56. The author says that the beauty and women are twins because women try to maintain their beauty by dressing up.
()57. Ads on TV screen, radio programs, magazines, newspaper, etc, talk little about fashion.
()58. According to the author, in order to stay young and attractive, women should dress up in beautiful clothes .
()59.As a woman grows older, her beauty will gradually disappear.
()60. From the passage, we can infer that women should lay more emphasis on their own qualities.
