Passage 1

After practising as a surgeon for several years, Dr.Ginoux decided to apply for membership in the American College of Surgeons( 美 國(guó) 外 科 醫(yī) 生 學(xué) 會(huì) ), a highly selective and distinguished( 著 名 的 ) professional organization.

As part of the application procedure(手續(xù)), Dr.Ginoux was asked to prepare a list of all the operations performed in the previous even years. Slowly, as she worked on the long list, she began to feel uncertain. She began to question some of her decisions. Had she used the best technique in that case? Maybe, in this case, she should have given one more test before operating? On the other hand, maybe she should have... Would

the doctors on the selection committee understand that, as the only trained surgeon in the area, she usually could not get advice from others and therefore, had to rely completely on her own judgment? For the first time, Dr.Ginoux felt lonely and isolated.

The longer Dr.Ginoux worked on the application forms, the more depressed she became. As hope faded, she wondered if a “country doctor” had a realistic chance of being accepted by the American College of Surgeons.

Passage 2

There was a time when, if a lady got into a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer his seat. But now, things are different. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or if he feels a bit shy, hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone else gets off.

You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners, though. Gone are the days when women could be referred to as weakers without causing trouble. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men, not just equality in jobs or education, but in social life. Hold a door open for some women and you are likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors (能力低下的人) unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for meal and she’ll probably insist on paying her share of the bill. On second thoughts, that is perhaps not such a bad idea.

It’s no wonder, then, that men have given up some ways of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, the man’s active politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings, rather than as weakers or something that can be used to please men.

31. Today, when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would probably ________.

A. stand up and offer her his seat

B. read his newspaper

C. look out of the window

D. not stand up and offer her his seat

32. What men do towards women on a crowded bus or train today is ________.

A. really bad

B. strange enough

C. not entirely wrong

D. entirely wrong

33. The new generation of women wants to be ________.

A. treated not as the weaker sex

B. treated as the weaker sex

C. cared for on buses and trains

D. better treated than before

34. According to the passage, which of the following is Not correct?

A. Some women may get angry if you open the door for them.

B. Girls don’t want you to pay for meal at all.

C. Some women may criticize you if you show too much politeness to them.

D. A girl may be unhappy if you insist on paying her share of the bill.

35. From this passage, we know that ________.

A. women need true consideration of their needs and feelings

B. men have given up some politeness they used to show to women

C. women often get angry if you’re polite to them

D. women should stand in the bus or train

Passage 3

According to psychologists(心理學(xué)家), an emotion is aroused when a man or animal views something as either bad or good. When a person feels like running away from something he thinks will hurt him, we call this emotion fear. If the person wants to remove the danger by attacking it, we call the emotion anger. The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us. An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a person’s thoughts.

Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write. A growing child not only learns his motions but learns how to act in certain situations because of an emotion.

Psychologists think that there are two types of emotions: positive and negative. Positive emotions include love , liking , joy , delight and hope. They are aroused by something that appeals to a person.

Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfied. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness and disgust. In growing up, a person learns to cope with the negative emotions in order to be happy.

Emotions may be weak or strong. Some strong emotions are so unpleasant that a person will try any means to escape from them. In order to feel happy, he person may choose unusual ways to avoid the emotion.

Strong emotions can make it hard to think and to solve problems. They may prevent a person from learning or paying attention to what he is doing. For example, a student taking an examination may be so worried about failing that he cannot think properly. The worry drains valuable mental energy he needs for the examination.

D. one tries to escape from real life

Passage 4

The decline in moral standards-which has long concerned social analysts-has at last captured the attention of average Americans. And Jean Bethke Elshtain. for one, is glad.

The fact that ordinary citizens are now starting to think seriously about the nations moral climate says this ethics professor at the University of Chicago, is reason to hope that new ideas will come forward to improve it.

But the challenge is not to be underestimated. Materialism and individualism in American society are biggest obstacles. “The thought that ‘I’m in it for me’ has become deeply rooted in the national consciousness,” Ms. Elshtain says.

Some of this can be attributed to the disintegration of traditional communities, in which neighbors looked out for one another, she says. With today,s greater mobility and with so many couples working those bonds have been weakened, replaced by a greater emphasis on self.

In a 1996 Poll of Americans, loss of morality topped the list of the biggest problems facing the U.S. And Elshtain says the public is correct to sense that: Data shows that Americans are struggling with problems unheard of in the 1950s, such as classroom violence and a high rate of births to unmarried mothers.

“The desire for a higher moral standard is not a lament(to )for some nonexistent golden age,” Elshtain says,“ nor is it a wishful(一廂情愿的) longing for a time that denied opportunities to women and minorities. Most people, in fact, favor the lessening of prejudice.”

“Moral decline will not be reversed until people find ways to counter the materialism in society,” she says. “Slowly, you recognize that the things that matter are those that cant be bought.”

41. Professor Elshtain is pleased to see that Americans ____________.

A. have adapted to a new set of moral standards

B. are longing for the return of the good old day

C. hate realized the importance of material things

D. are awakening to the lowering of their moral standards

42. The moral decline of American society is caused mainly by ____________.

A. growing wealth

B. the self-centerdness of individuals

C. underestimating the impact of social changes

D. the prejudice against women and minorities

43. Which of the following characterizes the traditional communities?

A. Great mobility.

B. Concern for one’s neighbors

C. Emphasis on individual effort

D. Ever weakening social bonds

44. In the 1950s, classroom violence ____________.

A. was something unheard of

B. was by no means a rare occurrence

C. attracted a lot of public attention

D. began to appear in analysts’ data

45. According to Elshtain, the current moral decline may be reversed ____________.

A. if people can return to the“ golden age”

B. when women and men enjoy equal rights

C. when people rid themselves of prejudice.

D if less emphasis is laid on material things

Section B Short Answer Questions(5 points, 1 point for each)

Directions: Answer each of the following questions with not more than 5 words. Learning Business Skills through Junior Achievement Junior Achievement is an international movement to educate young people about business and economics for the purpose of helping them prepare to succeed in the world economy. The organization is the largest of its kind.

Junior Achievement has gone through different stages in its development. It was started by the business leader, Horace Moses and Theodore Vail, and Senator Murray Crane in 1919 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The organization started with a small number of children aged ten to twelve. For more than 50 years, Junior

Achievement programs met after school as a group of business clubs. But in 1975, Junior Achievement began to offer classes during school hours. Many more young people joined the organization once it began to teach business skills as part of the school day. In 2004, Junior Achievement Worldwide was formed.

The Junior Achievement programs teach about businesses, how they are organized, and how products are made and sold. The programs also teach about the American and world economics and business operations. Young people can learn how entrepreneurship works by operating their own companies. For instance, the students develop a product and sell shares in their company. They use their money to buy the materials they need to make their product, which they then sell. Finally, they return the profits to the people who bought shares in the company. It is reported that in the United States alone, there are more than 22,000 places that hold Junior Achievement events currently. According to Junior Achievement, about 287,000 volunteers support its Programs around the world.
