四、4.Reading Comprehension

Part III  Reading Comprehension
Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

1.If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written on it an aceount(記錄) of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.
It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes people did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.
Sometimes, of course, even if the people can not write, they may know something of the past. For most people can tell proudly what their fathers did in the past. This we may call "remembered history". Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written re- cords, such spoken stories are often very helpful.

Which of the following ideas is not mentioned in the passage?

A.Remembered history, compared with written history, is less reliable.
B.Written records of the past play a most important role in our learning of the human history.
C.A written account of our daily. activities helps us to be able to answer any questions.
D.Where there are no written records, there is no history.

2.
We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because______.

A.there was nothing worth Being written down at that time
B.the people there don"t pay attention to the importance of keeping a record
C.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fire
D.the people there did not know how to write

3.

A.history based on a person"s imagination
B.stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouth
C.songs and dances about the most important events
D.both B and C

Great waves crashed(墜毀)down on their little yacht. The mast(船桅) broke and the yacht was soon thrown against some rocks near a deserted island.
The three men were able to struggle to the island, taking with them as much food as they could carry. Not a tree, not a bush, not a flower grew on the island. There was not an animal of any kind, not even a bird or an insect. For a few weeks the three men were able to live on the food they had saved, but at last it was gone--except for one piece of bread. They decided that whoever had the best dream the next night could have the bread. The next morning they took turns describing their dreams.

Part IV  Cloze
Directions: There are some blanks in the following passages. For each blank there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should choose the one that best fits into the passages. Then, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

1.Everyone uses the expressions AM and PM. But do you exactly know what they mean and how they came into being?
As you know, the turning of the earth makes the sun and the stars seem to move across the sky. Daylight, of course,【21】, when the sun rises in the east and when the sun is high【22】the sky, between these two positions, half of the daylight hours have been spent.
Therefore, by noticing【23】the sun stood in the sky, early man know they could tell the time of the day, At night the motion of the stars【24】the same purpose. The important thing in keeping time is to know the exact moment of【25】. For each of us, wherever we are, noon is when the sun is directly overhead. Think of an imaginary line【26】the sky, stretching from the north point of your horizon just to the south point.
When the sun cross your meridian (子午線), it is noon for you. When the sun still【27】of this line, or the meridian, it is morning. After the sun has crossed this line, it is【28】.
The Latin word for "midday" is "deridian",【29】which comes our word meridian. So AM is an abbreviation (縮寫(xiě)詞) for "ante meridean", or before midday, and PM for after midday. Each or the world"s time zones (時(shí)區(qū)) is about fifteen degrees wide in longitude (經(jīng)度), which is about the distance the sun moves through tile sky in all hour.【30】lives in the same time zone observes noon at the same moment. In this way, the time is different by one hour as you move through each time zone.
