Part III  Reading Comprehension

1.Germans may make great cars, brew delicious beer, and give the world amazing fashion models, but they still feel unloved and unwanted.
Sixty years after the Second World War, Germans find themselves still disliked across Europe. They feel that they are taking blame personally for two world wars or for rude behavior. by German tourists, or they sense they are envied because of their country"s prosperity.
The latest round of introspection(反省) emerged after a blind German singer, who had been tipped as a favorite to win last month"s Eurovision song contest, ended up a disappointing 21st in a field of 25.
"was it just the song or was it because people in other countries just don"t like us? " asked Bild newspaper columnist David Blieswood,, expressing the nationwide distress.
  (76) Germany"s best-selling daily was filled the following week with letters from readers complaining that Germans will never win contests like Eurovision because they are so loathed abroad.
Germans made a huge effort to improve their position and put the image of dangerously belligerent(好戰(zhàn)的) armies behind them. But, in spite of that, Germans regularly get disliked across Europe.
"The stereotypes of Germans are treated the way they behave. Some are indeed very arrogant," said Lutz Erbring, a professor for media studies at Berlin"s free University." But stereotypes are often badly outdated. Germans are considered to be hard-working, in reality Germans are the laziest people in Europe."
The British newspaper the Guardian recently cited a Europe-wide survey which asked people to score each country out of 10 according to how much respect and love they had each other. (77)Germans came in second to last, just ahead of the British. The Irish were ranked as the most popular.

What is the reason, Germans feel, for their being unloved.

B.rude behavior
C.jealousy of their prosperity

7.What makes it rain? Rain falls from clouds for the same reason anything falls to Earth. The Earth"s Gravity(重力) pulls it. But every cloud is made of water droplets or ice crystals. Why doesn"t rain or snow fall constantly from all clouds? The droplets or ice crystals in clouds are exceedingly small. The effect of gravity on them is minute. Air currents move and lift droplets so that the net downward displacement is zero, even though the droplets are in constant motion.
Droplets and ice crystals behave somewhat like dust in the air made visible in a shaft(束) of sunlight. To the casual observer, dust seems to act in a totally random fashion, moving about wildly without fixed direction. But in fact dust particles are much larger than water droplets and they finally fall. The cloud droplet of average size is only 1/2,500 inch in diameter. (78)It is so small that it would take sixteen hours to fall half a mile in perfectly still air, and it does not fall out of moving air at all. Only when the droplet grows to a diameter of 1/125 inch or larger can it fall form. the cloud. The average raindrop contains a million times as much water as a tiny cloud droplet. The growth of a cloud droplet to a size large enough to fall out is the cause of rain.

What is the main topic of the passage?

A.The mechanics of rain.
B.The climate of North America.
C.How gravity affects air current.
D.Types of clouds.

8.
The word "minute" in line 5 is closest in meaning to which for the following?

10.
What can be inferred about drops of water larger than 1/125 inch in diameter?

A.They never occur.
B.They are not affected by the force of gravity.
C.They would fall to earth.
D.In moving air they fall at a speed of thirty-two miles per hour.

11.
What is not mentioned in the passage?

A.Rain does not fall from all the clouds.
B.The effect of the gravity on droplets is minute.
C.The average raindrop contains much more water than a tiny cloud droplets.
D.The shape of the clouds have a great influence on the raindrop.

13.One summer evening I was sitting by the open window, reading a good science storybook. (79)I was so interested in the story I was reading that I did not notice that it was getting dark. When I realized it was too dark for me to read easily, I put the book down and got up to turn on the light. Just then I heard someone crying, "Help! Help!" it seemed to come from the trees at the other end of the yard. (80)I looked out but it was now too dark to see anything clearly. Almost immediately I heard the cry again. It sounded like a child, but I could not imagine what anybody could be doing in our backyard, unless one of the neighborhood children had climbed a tree and had not been able to get down.
I decided that I should go out and have a look in the yard, just in case someone was in trouble. I turned on the light and found for myself a flashlight and a baseball bat in the room. I thought they might be useful. Armed with these, I went out into the yard. Once again I heard the cry and this time there was no doubt that it came from the trees at the far end of the yard. "Who"s there?" I called out as I walked across the yard towards the trees. But there was no answer. With the help of my flashlight, I searched all over that end of the yard, including the branches of the tree. There was no sign of anybody or anything. I came to the conclusion that my imagination was playing tricks on me, probably because of the story I was reading about strange creatures on another planet.
Feeling rather foolish about hunting around in my own backyard with a baseball bat, I went back into the house and put the bat and the flashlight away. I had just sat down to read my book again when I was frightened by the cry of "Help! Help!" from right behind me. I dropped my book and jumped up. There, sitting on the table was a large green and red bird. It was my neighbor"s parrot(鸚鵡)!While I was out in the yard, the parrot must have seen the light in the living room and come in through the open window.
