三、3.Reading Comprehension

Part III  Reading Comprehension
Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

1.There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling.
If spelling becomes the only focal point of. his teacher"s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to "play safe". He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That" s why teachers often encourage the early, use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible! There are "far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible(難以辨認(rèn)的)." It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil"s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child" s deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his. priorities had centred on the child" s idea, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.

Teachers are different in their opinions about ______.

A.the difficulties in teaching spelling
B.the role of spelling in general language development
C.the complexities of the basic writing skills
D.the necessity of teaching spelling

2.
The expression "play safe" probably means ______.

A.students will be able to express their ideas more freely
B.teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakes
C.students will have more confidence in writing
D.students will learn to be independent of teachers

4.
The writer seems to think that the teacher" s judgement on that sensitive piece of writing is ______.

A.reasonable
B.unfair
C.foolish
D.careless

5.
The major point discussed in the passage is ______.

A.the importance of developing writing skills
B.the complexities of spelling
C.the correct way of marking compositions
D.the relationship between spelling and the content of a composition

7.Having no language, infants cannot be told what they need to learn. Yet by the age of three they will have mastered the basic structure of their native language and will be well on their way to communicative competence. Acquiring their language is a most impressive intellectual feat. Students of how children learn language generally agree that the most remarkable aspect of this feat is the rapid acquisition of grammar. Nevertheless, the ability of children to conform. to grammatical rules is only slightly more wonderful than their ability to learn words. It has been reckoned that the average high school graduate in the United States has a reading vocabulary of 80,000 words, which includes idiomatic expressions and proper names of people and places. This vocabulary must have been learned over a period of 16 years. From the figures, it can be calculated that the average child learns at a rate of about 13 new words per day. Clearly a learning process of great complexity goes on a rapid rate in children.

What is the main subject of the passage?

A.Language acquisition in children.
B.Teaching languages to children.
C.How to memorize words.
D.Communicating with infants.

8.
The underlined word "feat" is closest in meaning to which of the following?

D.Accomplishment.

9.
The underlined word "reckoned" is closest in meaning to which of the following?

B.Estimated.
C.Proved.
D.Said.

10.
The underlined word "which" refers to ______.

A.their ability
B.reading vocabulary
C.idiomatic expression
D.learning process

11.

A.They learn words before they learn grammar.
B.They learn even very long words.
C.They learn words very quickly.
D.They learn the most words in high school.

13.All the useful energy at the surface of the earth comes from the activity of the sun. The sun heats and feeds mankind. Each year it provides men with two hundred million tons of grain and nearly ten million tons of wood.
Coal, oil, natural gas, and all other fuels are stored-up energy from the sun. Some was collect ed by this season"s plants as carbon compounds. Some was stored by plants and trees ages ago.
Even waterpower derives from the sun. Water turned into vapor by the sun falls as rain. It courses down the mountains and is converted to electric power.
Light transmits only the energy that comes from the sun" s outer layers, and much of this energy that is directed toward the earth never arrives. About nine-tenths of it is absorbed by the atmosphere of the earth. In fact; the earth itself gets only one half-billionth of the sun" s entire output of radiant energy.

25.The computer is a wonderful machine. It is the most important invention since the type of engine used in cars. Today it has the greatest effect on science, industry and business, but it is being used more in education and medicine. By the end of this century it will touch the lives of everyone, even people in distant villages. It is a revolutionary invention.
The oldest kind of computer is the abacus, used in China since the sixth century. In the seventeenth century an adding machine was invented, but the first large, modern computer was built in 1973. A few years later a computer could do 5,000 additions per second. Now the computations are so fast that they are measured in nanoseconds.
Today most computers are stored-program computers, that is, they have a memory. They are getting smaller and smaller, and computing faster and faster. Even in a large computer, the part that does the actual computing is about the size of the end of a finger.
Computers can do all kinds of work. When someone buys something in a department store, in formation about the sale goes into a computer. A scientist can talk to the computer about the rocks, and the computer answers the questions. A doctor can talk to the computer and explains what is wrong with a patient. If the doctor asks why, the computer goes through its stored information and ex plains exactly why.
When early humans began fanning, it was a revolutionary change in human life. It was hundreds of thousands of years later that people developed a writing system. In less than fifty years people have developed computers that can do most of the things humans can do. This could be a frightening development.
