Part III Reading Comprehension
Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
1.Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe (訂閱) to as many as two or three newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?
Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings - battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown (推翻) or killed took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the some day they happen.
Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and, of course, advertisements. (76) The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country.
For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit.
(77) Newspapers often have information on gardening, cooking and fashion, as well as a small but very popular section on jokes and cartoons (漫畫(huà)).

7.Believe it or not, optical illusion (錯(cuò)覺(jué)) can cut highway crashes.
(78) Japan is a case in point. (79) It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent stripes, called chevrons (人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan"s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
(80) Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed - related hazards are the greatest - curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars pained across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.
The main point of the passage is ______.
A.a(chǎn) new way of highway speed control
B.a(chǎn) new approach to training drivers
C.a(chǎn) new pattern for painting highways
D.a(chǎn) new type of optical illusion
8.
On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that ______.
A.they are driving in the wrong lane
B.they should avoid speed - related hazards
C.they should slow down their speed
D.they are approaching eh speed limit
9.
The advantage of chevrons over straight horizontal bars is that the former ______.
A.can keep drivers awake
B.can cut road accidents completely
C.will have a longer effect on drivers
D.will look more attractive
10.
The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to ______.
A.try out the Japanese method in certain areas
B.sign the chevrons across the country
C.replace straight horizontal bars with chevrons
D.repeat the Japanese road patterns
11.
What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?
A.They are falling out of use in the United States
B.They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.
C.They are applicable only on broad roads.
D.They cannot be applied successfully to traffic circles.
13.The atmosphere is all the air surrounding the earth. Without it, we would be forced to seek shelter from the sun, as there would be no atmosphere to protect us from the sun"s deadly rays.
Large and powerful, the atmosphere consists of an ocean of gases hundreds of miles high. It presses down on our bodies with a force of more than fourteen pounds per square inch. The narrow column of air which rests upon our shoulders weighs almost 2000 pounds. But our bodies are built in such a way that this weight does not crush (壓碎) us.
In this huge ocean of air there is more energy than in all the coal, oil, and gas we have on earth. Electrical energy is collected in the atmosphere as water is collected and stored in a dam. The existence of electricity in the air has been known for centuries. But a thorough study of electricity in the atmosphere was not possible until the development of radio and radar.
One scientist, Dr. Sydney Chapman, has tried to explain the electric field which surrounds the earth. He believes that great storms on the sun create large amounts of electric energy. This energy is contained in a very light gas called hydrogen. The earth pulls the gas toward it, and a ring is formed around the earth several thousand feet above its surface. The great space ring is a powerful current of electrical energy. Sometimes the ring comes down and curves into the lower atmosphere, causing strange electrical effects.
His idea explains many things. It has long been known that there is an electric field inside the earth. It moves in much the same manner as the electric energy contained in the atmosphere. Scientists now believe that the electric energy in the atmosphere causes the electric energy inside the earth to flow.
If we can learn to control the energy in the atmosphere, we will have an unending supply of energy. Many scientists are trying to learn how to control it, In the meantime, even those of us who are not scientists have begun to pay attention to air. We realize that air does not contain the same elements that it contained years age. Automobiles, airplanes, factories, and atomic explosions have added dust and waste gases to the atmosphere. It is time to learn how to protect our atmosphere, the roof over the world of man.
We know the atmosphere as ______.
A.the total amount of oxygen over the earth
B.mixture of gases surrounding the earth
C.a(chǎn) source of storms
D.the diffusion of waste gas
14.
All of the following are true EXCEPT ______.
A.the atmosphere is important to none.
B.a(chǎn) great deal of damage from the sun"s deadly rays would be done to us, if there were no at mosphere.
C.the atmosphere, as the author described, is the roof under which man can live safely on Earth.
D.electricity in the atmosphere is being studied from every aspect.
15.
Quantity of energy contained in the atmosphere is ______.
A.smaller than that in coal alone
B.smaller than that either in oil or in gas that we have on Earth
C.greater than that in coal, oil and gas on Earth combined
D.greater than that in coal, oil and gas on Earth, respectively
16.
According to scientists, if the energy in the atmosphere were put under our control, what would happen?
A.We have an inexhaustible supply of energy from it.
B.This could bring the world to an energy crisis.
C.The sources of energy on earth would become unreliable.
D.We find ourselves in difficult position with environmental pollution.
17.
The main topic of the passage is ______.
A.composition of the atmosphere
B.pressure from the atmosphere

D.the relationship between the atmosphere and men
