二、2.Reading Comprehension

Part III  Reading Comprehension
Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

1.What is color? Why do some objects look red, others green, others blue?
Color is caused by reflected light rays. We see color because objects reflect light. Some thing that is red reflects mostly red light. In the same way, a green object reflects mostly green light. White objects reflect all colors of light. Black objects do not reflect any light.
What happens to the colors of light that are not reflected? They are absorbed by the object. The darker the color, the less light is reflected and the more light is absorbed. Light that is absorbed is turned into heat. For this reason, dark-colored clothes are warmer in the sunlight than light-colored clothes.

Which is the main idea of this passage?

7.Compared with the robot, the human worker is undoubtedly superior. He is capable of performing a wider variety of work.
Moreover, he is able to adapt his working pattern in order to cope with changing situations which the robot cannot do. On the other hand, the human worker is relatively weak and cannot tolerate work in extreme conditions such as extremely high or low temperatures.
Consequently, we find humans and robots working together in many areas of work. Robots are used to perform. dangerous tasks so that their human operators need not risk their lives. To handle harmful radioactive materials, such as uranium (鈾), robots in the form. of machined arms are used so the human operators can stay from the fatal rays.
Another advantage of the robot is that it never complains about long working hours or that it is boring. It works around the clock and performs equally well in any situation. It needs little servicing and absolutely no holidays. That is why many of them are used to replace human workers for simple and repetitive jobs. The car manufacturers, for example, were amongst the first to use robots to replace workers working on the assembly line. They take over such boring tasks as tightening nuts and screws and spraying paint. Released from these unrewarding tasks, the human worker can be trained for more fulfilling posts, where he can make full use of his ability and get satisfaction from them. The management, on the other hand, will also benefit from these "human pretenders" as they form. a new work force which is able to produce more at a lower cost.
Looking to the future, we can expect tomorrow"s robots to be even more "intelligent" than those of today.

Humans and robots worked together in many areas of work because ______.

A.robots never complain about the tiring work
B.the management can pay little and benefit a lot
C.it is dangerous for humans to do some harmful work
D.they have their own weaknesses and advantages

8.
The central idea conveyed in the passage is that ______.

A.a(chǎn)lthough robots can do much dangerous and tiring work, humans are superior
B.a(chǎn)lthough humans are superior, robots can do much better in many areas of work
C.robots will replace humans in more and more fields
D.robots are superior to humans because they can do much work that humans can"t do

9.
It can be inferred from the passage that all the work on the assembly line was ______.

A.dangerous and dull
B.harmful but beneficial
C.repetitive and dull
D.easy but tiring

13.When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to the manufacturer"s claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty (保單), or any other records which might help, at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.
A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the "higher up" the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer"s favor, assuming he or she has a just claim.
Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.
Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can demonstrate what is wrong with the item in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, "The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear" is better than "This stereo (立體聲音響) does not work."
The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer. If so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or public organization responsible for protecting consumers" rights.

When a consumer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to ______.

A.complain personally to the manager
B.threaten to take the matter to court

19.Increasingly, over the past ten years, people -- especially young people have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed food, is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain chemical additives and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers, widely used in farming today.
Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount-- but not the quality -- of foods grown in commercial farming areas.
Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy pastures. Compare this with what happens in the mass production of poultry: there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens live crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins.
There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. It is significant that nowadays fiber is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fiber has been removed. But it is presented in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Hence emphasis placed on the eating of whole meal bread and more vegetables by modem experts on "healthy eating."
