三、3.
1.Around the world more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Now, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.
I would consider bungee jumping (蹦極) to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place 200 meters above the ground with an elastic(彈性的) rope tied to your feet. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs.
Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people"s lives were constantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.
Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in quite safe conditions; they buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

7.In spite of all stories of prosperity in the Unites States, not only does poverty exist there, but crimes of various types have been increasing at an alarming rate. Most acts of violence were committed by young people. 57% of the riminals arrested in 1979 were youths below 25 of age.
Everyone agrees that crime is partly a result of bad material conditions: poverty, lack of education, living within settled home, being parentless, sufferings from other kinds of misfortune, etc.
There are also other factors than material conditions which are responsible for the sharp increase of crime rate. In the first place, some state laws provide a death penalty but some not. Secondly, the Constitution (憲法) allows every citizen to carry weapons for his own protection. It is therefore possible and easy for anyone in the country to get a gun. Finally, there has been too much shown on TV and too much reported in newspaper of all kinds of crimes—the details of which are so accurately described that even children know how to duplicate what they have seen or read. All these have resulted in a high frequency of crimes committed both by professional criminals and by nonprofessional ones in murder, drug smuggling, robbery, etc.
The author intends to tell the readers that______.
A.the United States is a wealthy country although poverty and crime exist there
B.crime has become a serious problem in the United States, although it is said to be a prosperous one

13.We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons; most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from place that are too crowded.
When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration(遷移) is probably the migration of the fish, which is called " salmon". This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is cold, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies there. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move to the seaside and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.
Recently, scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster (龍蝦) . Every year, when the season of the bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go.
So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don"t. Maybe living things just like to travel.

19.You can tell the age of a tree by counting its ring. But these records of a tree"s life really say a lot more. Scientists are using tree ring to learn what"s been happening on the sun"s surface for the last ten thousand years. Each ring represents a year of growth. As the tree grows, it adds a layer to its trunk, taking up chemical elements from the air. By looking at elements in the rings from a certain years, scientists can tell what elements were in the air that year. Dr. Stevenson is analyzing one element, carbon-14, in ring from both living and dead trees. Some ring go back almost ten thousand years to the end of the Ice Age. When Stevenson followed the carbon-14 levels changed with the intensity of solar burning. You see, the sun has cycles. Sometimes it burns fiercely, and at other times it is relatively calm. During the sun"s violent periods, it throw off charged particles (粒子) in fast moving streams called "solar winds". The particularly interfere with the formation of carbon-14 on earth. When there is more solar wind activity, less carbon-14 is produced. Ten thousand years of tree ring show that the carbon-14 level rises and falls about every 420 years. The scientists concluded that solar wind activity must follow the same cycle.
The purpose of the scientists in studying tree ring is to ______.
