二、2.Reading Comprehension
1.In the water around New York city is a very small island called Liberty Island. On Liberty Island is a very special statue called Statue of Liberty. It is one of the most famous sights in the world.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States. The statue was made by a French sculptor named Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The inner support system was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the same man who made the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Liberty, of course, means freedom, and the Statue of Liberty was given to the United States to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of U. S. independence from England. The statue was built in France, taken apart piece by piece, and then rebuilt inn the United States. It was opened for the public on October 28, 1886.
As you might expect, the statue is very big. Visitors can ride an elevator from the ground to the bottom of the statue. If they want to, they can then walk up the 168 steps to reach the head of the statue where they can look out and enjoy the beautiful sight of New York.

7.Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places" that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country"s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country to keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the well-being of local inhabitants.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country"s economy can suffer.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50000 dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.
Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the para. that goes before the para. ? ______.

13.Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are book-lover or merely you are there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become engrossed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment-without buying a book, of course.
This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander about these places to your heart"s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant approach you with inevitable greeting: "Can I help you?" you needn"t buy anything you don"t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire carefully and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.
You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on ancient coins and to come out with a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing-something that had vaguely interested you up until then. This volume on the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you proved so interesting that you had to but it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section.
"Dust-jacket" in the first paragraph probably means ______.
A.a(chǎn) kind of clothes
B.protecting paper cover of a book
C.book cover full of dust
D.title of a book

19.Most episodes of absent-mindedness—forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room—are caused by a simple lack of attention, says Schacter. "You"re supposed to remember something, but you haven"t encoded it deeply."
Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don"t pay attention to what you did because you are involved in a conversation you"ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe. "Your memory itself isn"t failing you." says Schacter. "Rather, you didn"t give your memory system the information it needed."
Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness. "A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago," says Schacter, "may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox." Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relies on just that.
Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness, says Schacter. "But be sure the cue is clear and available," he cautions. If you want to remember to take a medication with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table-don"t leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a that that you keep in a pocket.
Another common episode of absent-mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you are there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. "Everyone does this from time to time," says Zelinscki. The best thing to do is to return to there you were before entering the room, and you"ll likely remember.
Why does the author think that encoding properly is very important? ______.
A.It helps us to understand our memory system better
B.It enables us to recall something from our memory
C.It expands our memory capacity considerably
D.It slows down the process of losing our memory
20.

A.they have a wide range of interest
B.they are more reliant on the environment

A.it will easily get lost
B.it"s not clear enough for you to treat
C.it"s out of your sight
D.it might get mixed up with other things
22.

A.If we focus our attention on one thing, we might forget another
B.Memory depends to a great extent on the environment
C.Reception helps improve our memory
D.If we keep forgetting things, we"d better return to where we were
23.

A.The process of gradual memory loss
B.The causes of absent-mindedness
C.The impact of the environment on memory
D.A way of encoding and recalling
