Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
1.Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh, and do things with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don"t always want people around. But we would feel very lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are just the same. Sometimes friends don"t get along. That doesn"t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will make up and go on being friends.
Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them. It could be that we will never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them.
Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women who have been friendly to people in a town. Some parks are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places. There"s more good news for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don"t. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

Now, because of two new studies, some researchers say the nutrient is so critical for older people that everyone over 65 should consider taking a daily supplement.
The latest finding comes from nutrition and immunology respected: Vitamin E boosts the immune system in older people. In an eight-month study of 88 seniors, the scientists found that those taking at least 200 international units of Vitamin E daily had stronger immune responses than those taking little or none. Alzheimer"s disease. Researchers tracked 341 moderately senile patients. Those who popped 2,000 IU of Vitamin E took seven months longer to reach an advanced stage of the disease.
Rangit Kumar Chandra, a Vitamin E researcher at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, says more studies are needed to learn who can benefit most and at what dose. Vitamin E thins the blood, so high doses can cause bleeding in people who also take blood thinning drags, even aspirin. Individuals with serious conditions should consult their doctors. But most people over 65, Chandra says, can take up to 200 IU with no side effects and great benefits.

13.Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America. The man who eventually found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan.
Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the severe winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan"s Straits. In November 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.
They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battle. The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. 19.For some time past it has been widely accepted that babies and other creatures learn to do things because certain acts lead to "rewards"; and there is no reason to doubt that this is true. But it used also to be widely believed that effective rewards, at least in the early stages, had to be directly related to such basic physiological "drives" as thirst or hunger. In other words, a baby would learn if he got food or drink or some sort of physical comfort, not otherwise.
It is now clear that this is not so. Babies will learn to behave in ways that produce results in the world with no reward except the successful outcome.
Papousek began his studies by using milk in the normal way to "reward" the babies and so teach them to carry out some simple movements, such as turning the head to one side or the other. Then he noticed that a baby who had had enough to drink would refuse the milk but would still go on making the learned response with clear signs of pleasure. So he began to study the children"s in situations where no milk was provided. He quickly found that children as young as four months would learn to turn their heads to right or left if the movement "switched on" a display of light -- and indeed that they were capable of learning quite complex turns to bring about this result, for instance, two left or two right, or even to make as many as three turns to one side.
Papousek"s light display was placed directly in front of the babies and he made the interesting observation that sometimes they would not turn back to watch the lights closely although they would "smile and bubble" when the display came on. Papousek concluded that it was not primarily the sight of the lights which pleased them, it was the success they were achieving in solving the problem, in mastering the skill, and that there exists a fundamental human urge to make sense of the world and bring it under intentional control.
According to the author, babies learn to do things which ______.
A.a(chǎn)re directly related to pleasure
B.will meet their physical needs
C.will bring them a feeling of success
D.will satisfy their curiosity
20.
Papousek noticed in his studies that a baby ______.
A.would make learned responses when it saw the milk
B.would carry out learned movements without being given milk
C.would continue the simple movements without being given milk
D.would turn its head to fight or left when it had enough to drink
21.
In Papousek"s experiment babies make learned movements of the head in order to ______.
A.have the light turned on
B.be rewarded with milk
C.please their parents
D.be praised
22.
The babies would "smile and bubble" at the lights because ______.
A.the lights were directly related to some basic "drives"
B.the sight of the lights was interesting
C.they need not turn back to watch the lights
D.they succeeded in "switching on" the lights
23.
According to the Papousek, the pleasure babies get in achieving something is a reflection of ______.
A.a(chǎn) basic human desire to understand and control the world
B.the satisfaction of certain physiological needs
C.their strong desire to solve complex problems
D.a(chǎn) fundamental human urge to display their learned skills
