三、3.Reading Comprehension

Part III  Reading Comprehension
Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

1.It is estimated that some seven hundred million people about half the world"s population are un able to read and write, and there are probably two hundred and fifty million more whose level of attainment(造詣、成就)is so slight that it barely qualifies a literacy(識(shí)字).
Recently the attack on illiteracy has been stepped up. A world plan has been drawn up by a committee of UNESCO experts in Paris, as part of the United Nations Development Decade, and an international conference on the subject has also been held. UNESCO stresses that functional literacy is the aim. People must learn the basic skills of responsible citizenship: the ability to read notices, newspapers, timetables, letters, price lists, to keep simple records and accounts, to sort out the significance of the information gathered, and to fill in forms.
The major areas of illiteracy are in Asia, and Central and South America. In Africa there are at least one hundred million illiterates, making up eighty to eighty-five per cent of the total population. In Europe the figure is about twenty-four million, most of them is Southern Europe, with Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Yugoslavia heading the list (the United Kingdom has about seven hundred thousand).

According to the estimate, the illiterate population in the world is ______.

A.two hundred and fifty million
B.one hundred million
C.a(chǎn)bout half of the total population in the world
D.seven thousand million

2.
The world plan mentioned in the passage aims at ______.

A.help the illiterates learn the basic skills of reading and writing
B.emphasizing the function of UNESCO
C.teaching basic skills to responsible citizens
D.helping people gather information

3.
The figure of illiteracy in Europe makes up ______.

A.3.4% of the total population in the world
B.2.5 % of the total illiterate in the world
C.1.7% of the total population in the word
D.1.7 % of the total illiterate in the world

4.
It can be learned from the passage that UNESCO ______.

A.holds international conference on the subject of illiteracy regularly
B.is an organization attached to the United Nations
C.has done much to help the illiterates learn to read and write
D.is a big company in Paris

5.
It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A.the world plan to help the illiterates learn to read and write will be realized very soon
B.UNESCO is the most powerful organization to solve the problem of illiteracy
C.responsible citizens should have been trained
D.in Africa over 80% of people can not read and write

7.Unless we spend money spotting and preventing asteroids now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know, say some scientists.
Asteroids are different forms of the meteoroids that race across the night sky. Most orbits the sun far from Earth and don"t threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a violent coming course together with Earth.
Buy $ 50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $10 mil]ion a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we"ll have a way to change its course.
Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn"t be cheap.
Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think asteroids big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare but if one did fall it would be the end of the world. "If we don"t take care of these big asteroids, they"ll take care of us. "Says one scientist. "Its that simple."
The cure, though, might be worse than the disease, Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons silting around on Earth? "The world has less to fear from doomsday rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them. "Said a New York Times article.

What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?

A.They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.
B.There are more asteroids than meteoroids.
C.They are heavenly bodies different in composition.
D.Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.

8.
What do scientists say about the violent coming course of an asteroid with the earth?

A.Violent coming courses of smaller asteroids with earth take place often than expected.
B.It"s still too early to say whether such a violent coming course might happen.
C.Such a violent coming course might happen once every 25 years.
D.It is very unlikely but the danger exists.

9.
What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapon to change the course of asteroids?

A.It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.
B.Further research should be done before it is proved to be capable.
C.It may create more problems than it might solve.
D.It is a waste of money because a violent coming course of asteroids with the earth is very. unlikely.

10.
We can conclude from the passage that ______.

A.a(chǎn)steroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future
B.workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a violent coming course of aster olds with the earth
C.the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime
D.while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world

13.Paris,21st November 1783. There were hundreds of people in the street round an enormous (巨大的) balloon. "What is it?" they asked. "What does it do?"
Then two young men came out of a house on the other side of the street, and went to the balloon. They had some wood and paper with them, and they put it into a big basket under the balloon. Then they got into the basket. They took food with them, and some warm clothes, because it was a cold day.
