二、2.Reading Comprehension

Part III  Reading Comprehension
Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

1.One answer to the questions of land shortage was suggested by a committee some years ago. A city was to be built at sea, housing 30 000 people.
The suggestion was to shape the city like a harbour. The outer wall of the harbour would stand on steel columns resting on the sea-bed. Naturally this could only be where the water was fairly shallow. The people would live in flats in the fifty-metre high outer wall. The flats would all face inwards, and would be made of concrete and glass. The glass would be specially made and coloured to control the heat and strong light from the sun.
The water inside this man-made harbour would be calm. The planners called this water the lake. On it would be floating islands carrying more buildings; a hospital, two theaters, a museum, an art exhibition hall and a church. On one of the islands would be a special plant, to take the salt out of sea water and turn it into fresh water.
People living in the city could move around on small boats driven by electricity , so there would be no air pollution from the burning of petrol. There would be platforms outside the main wall for ships bringing supplies. People could also travel to the mainland by motorboat or water plane.

What was suggested about the construction of a new city at sea?

A.The city was to be designed together with a harbour.
B.The walls around the city would be made of steel and glass.
C.The buildings of the city would rest on a floating island.
D.The people would live in flats made of coloured glass.

2.
How would fresh water be supplied to the city?

A.By treating sea water.
B.By getting it from the surrounding islands.
C.By building a small lake of fresh water inside the city.
D.By transporting it from the mainland.

3.
There would be no air pollution to this city because ______.

A.there was a special plant to treat the polluted air
B.the city was away from the mainland
C.people in the city did not burn oil or coal
D.vehicles there were powered by electricity

4.

7.The U.S. generates about four billion tons of solid waste a year. More than 90 percent is composed of agricultural and mining wastes. About 3 percent is from industrial wastes. 250 million tons of garbage and refuse come out from homes, schools, office buildings, stores and hospitals.
This mass of metals, paper, food, plastic, rubber and glass which is all mixed together seems of no earthly use to anyone.
Or is it? Scattered efforts across the country indicate that new technology, properly applied, might someday turn these millions of tons of refuse into an excellent source of raw materials for new uses.
Several new projects are carried out to study the possibility of treating wastes through pyrolysis (高溫分解)--a system of reducing refuse to basic chemicals, liquids and gases which have commercial value. In Florida, a special tube system provides automatic transport of refuse to a central collection building.
In short, many new ideas are being tested, and many will be needed, since no one method is likely to prove suitable everywhere.
However, many difficult economic and social questions must be answered before real progress can be made. Can recovered materials compete with new materials? What will be needed as encouragement to make resource recovery work? Will citizens pay the costs of changing our waste system?

The article suggests that garbage and refuse from homes and public places ______.

A.make up the largest percentage of solid wastes
B.make up a small percentage of solid wastes
C.a(chǎn)re not really considered in the solid waste problem
D.a(chǎn)re considered of no use to the earth

C.recovered materials won"t be able to compete with new materials
D.citizens will unwillingly pay the costs of changing the waste system

13."The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful," says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.
A single angry word has lost many a friend. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. "Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. ""Keep cool", says Webster, "anger is not argument. ""Be calm in arguing", says George Herbert," for fierceness makes error a fault."
To be angry with a weak man is to proye that you are not strong yourself. "Anger", says Pythagoras," begins with folly and ends with regret. "You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.
Self-control is man"s last and greatest victory.
If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confldence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.

What does the reader learn from the first paragraph?

B.One"s moral freedom is based on the control of himself.
C.To control oneself is the most difficult in one"s life.
D.ff a person holds his own feelings, he will feel most shameful.

B.If you always lose your temper, you will soon be finished.
C.If you cannot control yourself, you will become crazy.
D.If you are mad, you will be punished by the gods.

15.
Concerning the remarks by those well-known people on self-control, which of the following is NOT true?

A.It is better to keep calm, because anger does not mean truth.
B.Not keeping cool in arguing will make a small mistake serious.

19.Lithography is an art process of printing from a plane surface on which the image to be printed is ink-receptive and the blank area ink-repellent. Lithography is based on the antipathy of oil and water. A drawing is made in reverse on the ground surface of the stone with a crayon or ink that contains soap or grease. The image produced on the stone will accept printing ink and reject water. Once the grease in the ink has penetrated the stone, the drawing is washed off and the stone kept moist. It is then inked with a roller and printed on a lithographic press. As a process, lithography is probably the most unrestricted, allowing a wide range of tones and effects. Several hundred fine prints can be taken from a stone. The medium was employed by many 19th century artists, including Goya, Delacroix, Daumier, Degas, and remains popular with contemporary artists. Among American artists noted for their lithographs are Currier and Ives.
The Currier and Ives firm of lithographers was founded by Nathaniel Currier in 1834. James Ives joined the firm as a bookkeeper eighteen years later just after becoming Currier"s brother-in- law, and was made a partner in 1857. The pair showed an uncanny ability to predict what the American public would rush to buy in the way of cheap art, and literally hundreds of thousands of prints from as many as 7,000 individual pictures were named out and sold from the firm"s shop in lower New York by street vendors and over shop counters throughout the country and even in Europe. Though in the course of time the firm employed some of America"s finest artists, artistic excellence could certainly not be counted among the firm"s real goals. Nevertheless, some time after it went out of business in 1907, the prints enjoyed new popularity as collectors" items, the rarer examples fetching thousands of dollars in the 1920"s.
