三、Part III Reading Comprehension (40 points)

1.

You must have been troubled by when to say“I love you”because it is one of the greatest puzzles in our life.

What if you say it first and your partner doesn’t love you back? Or if they do say it but you don’t feel they mean it?Being the first to declare your love can be nervous and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness?Doesn’t it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand fast?

“Areally good relationship should be about being fair and being equal,” says psychologist Sidney Crown. “But love is seldom equal.” All relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the trouble will setin.“That feeling of‘I’ve always loved you more’may be subverted(破壞) foratime, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in quarreling.” In love, at least, the silent, with holding type is not always the most powerful. “The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings,” says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychos exual the rapist Paula Hall agrees, “The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. Infact, the person who says ‘I love you’ first may also be the one who says ‘I’m bored with you’ first.” Hall believes that much depends on how “I love you” is said and the motivation of the person saying it.“Is it said when they’re drunk? Is it said before their partner sets off on holiday, and what it really means is ‘Please don’t be unfaithful to me’?By saying ‘I love you’, they are really saying ‘Do you love me?’ If so, wouldn’t it just be more honest to say that?” Collins agrees that intention is everything.“It’s not what is said, but how it’s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker.”

Fifteen years ago, Ientered the Boston Globe, which was a temple to me then. It wasn’t easy getting hired. But once you were there, I found, you were in.

Globe jobs were for life-guaranteed until retirement. For 15 years I had prospered there—moving from an ordinary reporter to foreign correspondent and finally to senior. I would have a life time of security if I stuck to it.Instead, I had made a decision to leave. I entered my boss’s office. Would he rage?I wondered. He had a famous temper. “Matt, we have to have a talk,” I began awkwardly.“I came to the Globe when I was twenty-four. Now I’m forty. There’s a lot I want to doinlife. I’m resigning.” “To another paper?” he asked. I reached into my coat pocket, but didn’t say anything. I handed him a letter that explained everything. It said that I was leaving to start a new media company. We were at a rare turning point in history. I wanted to be directly engaged in the change.“I’m glad for you,”he said, quite out of my expectation.“I just came from aboard of directors meeting and it was seventy-five percent discouraging news. Some of that we can deal with. But much of it we can’t,” he went on.“I wish you all the luck in the world,”he concluded.“And if it doesn’t work out, remember, your star is always high here."

Then I went out of his office, walking through the news room for more good-byes. Everybody was saying congratulations. Everybody--even though I’d be risking all on an unfamiliar venture: all the financial security I had carefully built up.

Later, I had a final talk with Bill Taylor, chairman and publisher of the Boston Globe. He had turned the Globe into abillion-dollar property. “I’m resigning, Bill,” I said. During the hours when your labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at it speak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as:“ Get up, Peter! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that Peter is a this temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarreling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit if better Habit can help, Dr.Kleitman believes. May be you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habit ually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important thing to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get ups team and work better at your low point.

6.

Television has changed the lifestyle. of people in every industrialized country in the world. In the United States, where sociologists have studied the effects, some interesting observations have been made.

Television, although not essential, has become an important part of most people’s lives. It alters people’s ways of seeing the world; in many ways, it supports and sustains(維持) modern life.

Television has become a babysitter, an introducer of conversations, the major trans mitter of culture and a keeper of tradition. Yet when what can be seen on TV in one day is critically analyzed, it become sevident that television is not a teacher but a sustainer; the poor quality of programming does not elevate(提高) people into greater under standing, but rather main tains and encourages the life as it exists.

The primary reason for the lack of quality in American television is related to both the history of TV programming development and the economics of TV. Television in America began with the radio. Radio companies and their sponsors first experimented with television. Therefore, the close relationship which the advertisers had with radio programs became the system for American TV. Sponsors not only paid money for time with in programs, but many actually produced the programs. Thus, in American society, television is primarily concerned with reflecting and attracting society rather than experimenting with new ideas. Advertisers want to attract the large stviewing audience possible. To do sore quires that the programs be enter taining rather than educational, attractive rather than challenging.

Television in America today remains, to a large extent, with the same organization and standards as it had thirty years ago. The hope for further development and true achievement toward improving society will require a change in the entire system.According to the author, American television is poor in quality because_________.
