二、Reading Comprehension
1.We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contraiy, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in dividing pupils into different groups. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade! Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher. Sometimes the pupils work in pairs5 sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the libraiy, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this effectively. An advanced pupil can do advanced work; it does not matter how old the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal. 6.quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under attack. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (殺蟲劑) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which always includes plants that don’t have pest (害蟲)problems. Even better, Paley^ Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to tiie eye. An infrared scanner, on a plane flying at 3,000 feet at night, measured the heat send out by crops. The data was turned into a color-coded map showing where plants were running “fevers' Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley^ company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term supporters were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt about how the technology works. "This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States55, says George Oertfier of Texas A&M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks long-distance infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade, but only if Paley finds the financial support which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.
